Self-Organized Volunteers in Rural Schools
Lu, Kun
Chinese Education and Society, v41 n3 p85-102 May-Jun 2008
This paper reports some findings from a longitudinal study of a group of volunteers at an independent school in China. Founded by a committed group of volunteers, Springfield School has been self-sustaining and has provided junior high school education for the past eight years. The author describes the demographic and education background of the volunteers, as well as the various motivations that lead them to voluntary teaching service. In addition, the challenges encountered by the volunteers and the school are also discussed. The discussion is supported with rich first-hand data, and the conclusion draws comparisons between self-organized and officially organized volunteers. (Contains 2 notes.)
