Informal: Education? Let's Not Go Back There Again!
Dorph, Sheldon
Journal of Jewish Education, v73 n2 p119-120 May 2007
This article presents the author's response to Joseph Reimer's article titled, "Beyond More Jews Doing Jewish: Clarifying the Goals of Informal Jewish Education." The author discusses the "role" of teacher, which includes: engaging students in an academic subject each teacher has mastered, mentoring a particular small group of students about the issues they face at school and life, staffing student retreats and clubs, and participating with them in communal service and school trips. What the author and Reimer want are educators for whom knowledge with meaning; theory with practice, action with reflection are continuities and not discontinuities. So it surprises him that Reimer wants to resuscitate the dichotomous language of formal/informal that was prevalent in the mid-twentieth century and still embraced by some educators, while the understanding of identity formation and learning have advanced. That is why the author asserts that he prefers to speak of "experiential education," where the engagement of mind, heart, and hand create the opportunity for reflective, engaging, meaningful educational activity--in every area of community and culture and in every educational setting and moment.
