Montana State University (MSU) Libraries (where the authors serve as web services librarian and digital initiatives librarian, respectively) is perhaps unique because it has no current periodicals room due to lack of space. As a result, finding current journals for research is difficult for its patrons, who do not always know how or where to locate them. To answer this lack of a physical journal browsing environment, the authors developed a web-based journal TOC distribution system that enabled the delivery of journal articles to users' desktops. The current beta version of their TOC service is linked from their journals page at www.lib.montana.edu/journals. An individual sample of the TOC service is available at www.lib.montana.edu/toc/lis. Their system uses the common XML feed formats Atom and RSS, the Google AJAX Feed API, and some JavaScript (or server-side PHP) working within the Ajax framework to deliver targeted journal content to their users as a series of XHTML pages. The goal was a browsable web environment that enabled article-level access to the multiple journal packages available from MSU Libraries. How the authors were able to customize the MSU Libraries TOC service is detailed, the lessons they learned are enumerated, and the future of the TOC project is discussed.
