Doing More in Pediatric Primary Care: The Healthy Steps Model
Kaplan-Sanoff, Margot
Zero to Three, v27 n3 p20-29 Jan 2007
Pediatric primary care provides an enormous window of opportunity to offer families information and support on their child's social-emotional well-being and on their growth as a family in a nonstigmatizing environment. With new technology, such as the Internet, and advances in the scientific study of early childhood development, parents face an increasing array of "experts"--each with a different message and a different agenda--and many parents have become confused and would like to use their pediatric clinicians to help them make sense of the mixed messages they are receiving from more sources than in the past. This article describes how pediatric primary care can offer families enhanced well-child visits that emphasize the promotion of children's development, including strategies to improve "the goodness of fit" between parent and child, closer attention to parental questions and concerns, and the use of "teachable moments" to support better parental understanding of their child's behavior. The article offers concrete strategies to be used before the office visit, while in the waiting room, and in the examination room to address the social and emotional health issues of the family.
