Language Planning in Northern Ireland
Mac Giolla Chriost, Diarmait
Current Issues in Language Planning, v3 n4 p425-476 Dec 2002
This monograph offers an overview of the background of and current language policy and planning matters related to the language situation in Northern Ireland with reference to the full range of linguistic diversity in the polity. Particular attention is paid to the Irish language, due to the size of the Irish-speaking community in the region and the historical and political profile of the language. The current policy and planning framework for Irish is analysed and recommendations are provided on how effective progress in this area might be made in the short to medium term. The development of a community-based approach is suggested, drawing upon the Welsh model. (Contains 19 tables, 9 figures and 1 note.)
