Electronic Resources and the Education of History Professionals
Mulligan, William H., Jr.
History Teacher, v34 n4 p523-530 Aug 2001
The transforming effects of the tremendous advances in technology that have reshaped the economy and many other elements of American society have had an equally profound impact on historical agencies. The personal computer, the Internet, and associated electronic communications developments have already transformed the museum and historical agency world in a variety of ways almost too numerous to enumerate. These changes have taken place in a remarkably short period of time, during the professional lives of still relatively young people. These changes demand the thoughtful attention of those people who direct programs in public history, museum studies, and related fields if we are to train graduate students for successful careers in the field. In this article, the author discusses how individuals work in the field of history should maximize the opportunities these resources offer. He also shares how the Murray State Public History Program integrates various electronic resources into its public history graduate program. (Contains 12 notes.)
