Gather 'Round the Campfire: Engaging Students and Creating Storytellers
Higgins, Carrie
Knowledge Quest, v36 n5 p28-34 May-Jun 2008
In this article, the author describes the development of a storytelling unit she introduced to her school. She got the idea for the storytelling unit from the National Storytelling Festival she had attended several years ago in Jonesboro, Tennessee. When she proposed her idea of a storytelling unit culminating in a festival modeled on the national one, her colleagues were rightfully skeptical. Here, the author describes how their doubts were soon revealed as unfounded when their festival turned out to be a success. They found that the third-graders who participated in their project seemed to have a thirst for stories.
