Figuring out how to pay for college is a common challenge for many students across the country. But in Pennsylvania, where tuition at public two- and four-year institutions is among the highest in the country, state officials are revisiting a topic that has long frustrated students and officials alike. This article reports that with the meltdown of the financial markets and the economy teetering toward recession, the State Board of Education's Council on Higher Education decided to accelerate the scrutiny of the issue and hold a series of hearings late last month. Through the hearings across the state, members of the council say they want insight from those closest to the issue: students, parents, and higher-education officials. Many questions and much criticism were discussed, but no solutions were offered to help make college more affordable.
