Examining Institutional Barriers that Impede Access to Legal Education

Negro Educational Review, v59 n1-2 p79-92 Spr-Sum 2008
Preparation for and admission to law school is challenging for many students. For a number of years law schools have used criteria for admission that included school rankings and testing. Schools have been ranked by "The U. S. News and World Report" magazine and potential students have been tested with the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). Recently, both rankings and testing have been criticized and recognized as barriers to law school admissions. In addition to these barriers, problems with the pipeline leading to law school and the national decline of affirmative action programs have significantly contributed to limited access to law schools. These barriers and legislative policies that mandated the creation of two new law schools in Florida are addressed. We conclude that while these efforts are helping, more can be done to improve access to the legal profession for underrepresented students. (Contains 2 footnotes.)
