This article reports several two-year institutions who are seeking out architects to create impressive new buildings as well as imaginative renovations of humdrum buildings from the 1960s and 1970s. Johnson County Community College, in Overland Park, Kansas, opened a limestone-sheathed museum, designed by Kyu Sung Woo Architects, that the "Kansas City Star" called "a perfect container for art." The building, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, is a minimalist rectangle cantilevered over a glass-walled entrance. The $13-million structure has 11,000 square feet of exhibition space, 5,400 square feet of academic space, and a 3,000-square-foot atrium that connects it to an existing building.
