Second Life[TM], or simply SL, was developed at Linden Lab, a San Francisco-based corporation defined by its creators as "an online society within a 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its residents, where they can explore, build, socialize and participate in their own economy." With over 14 million residents in the SL virtual community, the reality of its impact is no longer questioned--few would argue that sustainability is even in doubt. Yet myths continue to proliferate as often occurs with any shift in social behavior shaped by fear and exaggerated expectations of technology. In this article, the author discusses some of the myths and realities of SL and suggests that educators must explore these before they invest their time, money, and reputations. (Contains 1 figure.)
