Is Your School Stuck in a Testing Rut? Use Your Library Media Center to Make Learning Fun Again!
DelGuidice, Margaux
School Library Media Activities Monthly, v25 n4 p30-32 Dec 2008
It is evident that many schools across the country are sweeping aside the fun and invigorating parts of education in order to prepare students for standardized tests. More and more classroom teachers are finding that they have less time to assign creative, hands-on projects and tasks to their students. On the elementary level, for example, research projects and other imaginative assignments often done through collaboration with library media specialists are dwindling due to time constraints. In this educational era of standardized testing and ranked results there seems to be little time for anything except regimented test prep. Research shows, however, that test prep can be fun when it is engaging and interactive. Certain types of stimulating test prep can make a difference and may change the pessimistic attitude that some students have towards test taking. The key to unlocking and engaging students is a simple traditional concept repackaged for the new millennium--reading! Library media specialists can be part of this approach because they have the ability to help students find books that they actually want to read, thereby having the power to change their outlook on reading. This article describes ways on how to put fun into learning with the use of the library media center.
