The Medical Excuse Game as It Is Played at Duke University
Christmas, William A.
Journal of American College Health, v57 n3 p345-348 Nov-Dec 2008
In 1964, Eric Berne, MD, captured one's imagination when he wrote "Games People Play", in which he described some common life experiences as repetitive social exercises requiring participants to assume specific roles to achieve an objective or situation about which they were not always aware. He provided fairly involved transactional analyses of each game. It has occurred to the author that the dean's excuse or medical excuse procedure at Duke University may resemble such a game. In this paper, the author describes the Medical Excuse Game and dispenses with a pysychological analysis. (Contains 1 figure.)
