College Stress and Psychological Well-Being: Self-Transcendence Meaning of Life as a Moderator

The central aim of this study is to examine the moderating effects of self-transcendence meaning on psychological well-being in respective of college students. The theoretical background of self-transcendence meaning is mainly oriental Buddhism and Taoism philosophy. Measures of stress and psychological well-being are College Stress Scale (CSS) and GHQ-20 and SES, and of self-transcendence meaning of life is Self-transcendence Meaning of Life Scale (SMLS). In the study, 788 undergraduate students from three specific universities in Beijing are included. Findings of the study partially confirm the moderating effects of self-transcendence meaning on the psychological well-being under college stress. Implications of the findings for future study are discussed. (Contains 2 tables.)
