Right-Minded Teachers: The Influence of the Socio-Political Context on the Preparation of Teachers in British Columbia, 1872-2002
Glegg, Alastair
Journal of Educational Administration and History, v37 n1 p19-37 Apr 2005
This paper explores the changing nature of expectations for teachers in British Columbia from the first formal teacher examinations to the present day. The 130 years can be broken down into five reasonably distinct time periods, each of which had different ideas of what constituted right-minded teachers. Discussing how succeeding generations have taken different views of what it means to be a good citizen, and how these views have influenced their expectations for teachers, which in turn have been reflected in the programs designed to produce those teachers, the author concludes that today's teachers educators should scrutinize their own expectations and motives as well as those of their predecessors.
