Unwelcome in Women's Studies
Kamolnick, Paul
Academic Questions, v20 n2 p122-134 Jun 2007
In this article, the author presents a case of a professor who, in electing to teach a special-topics course on human sex differences, discovers an entire program in the College of Arts and Sciences--Women's Studies (WMST)--whose criteria for course inclusion are in direct violation of several major rules and regulations governing academics at East Tennessee State University (ETSU). He also presents a detailed account of his attempts to have a bona fide academic course in human sex differences recommended to WMST students; his discovery of the non-academic criteria used by WMST in its consideration of courses appropriate to the program; his inability to get the director of the program to answer key questions related to their decision not to recommend his course; his discovery of the existence of what amounts to an unelected central committee that controls the WMST program; his inability to receive assistance from the College dean despite evidence that he had provided, documenting the non-academic criteria and procedures used by the WMST program; and finally, his decision to end his efforts at reform, and the likely consequences thereof.
