Mental Health Services in Head Start
Frey, Andy
NHSA Dialog, v11 n3 p173-186 Jul 2008
This dialog suggests that mental health services in Head Start should be more broadly defined than they currently are in many programs. Specifically, these services should emphasize the important role prevention (e.g., prereferral/identification) plays in promoting mental wellness. Additionally, this dialog briefly addresses the role of the mental health consultant in programs that broadly define mental health services and suggests the Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS]: Administration for Children and Families, 2001) may inadvertently contribute to narrowly defined mental health services. The dialog is intended to stimulate discussion on the conceptualizations of mental health services and the role of mental health consultants within Head Start. Following the dialog, a number of professionals reflect on these thoughts.
