In September 1999, Donald J. and Catherine Willower established the Willower Family Lecture Series as a way to add to the intellectual climate of the University at Buffalo-State University of New York (UB), while enhancing the reputation of its Graduate School of Education (GSE). This lecture series resides in UB's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy, specifically, the Educational Administration Program. This article presents the lecture of Professor Michael Dantley of Miami University. Dr. Dantley's lecture was the keynote address for a workshop entitled A Passion for Leadership: Cultivating Change in Schools and Communities that was cosponsored by the GSE and the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) Center for the Study of School-site Leadership. Over 150 academics, community members, and educational practitioners participated in this day-long event. In his lecture, he talked about his research on leadership, spirituality, and social justice. He suggests that there are three components of a new leadership paradigm, which includes a leadership that: (1) emphasizes academic achievement and bringing about societal change; (2) uses the environment as a part of the instructional program; and (3) sees schools as one of the vehicles to build critical democratic citizens. He also discusses three categories of educational leadership he believes are grounded in Cornel West's prophetic spirituality and these are what he called as principled leadership, pragmatic leadership, and purposive leadership.
