Another Spotlight on the Continent: "TechTrends" in Africa
Kinuthia, Wanjira
TechTrends: Linking Research and Practice to Improve Learning, v52 n4 p21-23 Jul 2008
Much has been written about the technology divide that inevitably leads to a knowledge divide. Dire figures and statistics are often introduced into discussions that contrast Africa to the rest of the world. It is not unusual to read about how the rapid changes in information and communication technology (ICT) cannot be disengaged from globalization and economic development, and how Africa must quickly log on before it is left behind. It is also not unusual to read about the educational technology integration challenges that are faced. These challenges have been brought on by massification of education geared at economic development, but stifled by limited resources and connectivity. Many countries in Africa have a long history of using distance education, primarily via radio and print correspondence, to reach geographically dispersed populations. Rather than focus on where the continent needs to be headed, or on the merits and demerits of technology and e-learning, the author highlights some of the strides and accomplishments. There are many initiatives in progress and they vary in scope, objectives, and context. The examples provided here are simply highlights of current trends.
