Global Issues and the Precautionary Principle
Brody, Charlotte
Zero to Three, v26 n2 p45-48 Nov 2005
The author observes that environmental science is finding that industrial chemicals act like pharmaceuticals: a dose that won't hurt an adult can harm a fetus or a child; an amount that won't harm the mother can hurt her child in utero; some people are more sensitive than others to the effect; and one substance can interact with others and cause a problem that neither substance would cause by itself. The author argues for protection of women and girls who could be pregnant--not just women who are pregnant. She notes that although there are some things a woman who knows she is pregnant can do to protect her baby from toxic chemicals--like preventing mercury exposure by eating wild salmon instead of tuna or not using pesticides in the home--much of our exposure to environmental toxins is not preventable through personal practice. The author argues that in order for women of childbearing age and families to be protected from environmental harm, the chemical industry and the industries that use chemicals must take responsibility for the part of the problem that belongs to them. The Safe Cosmetics Campaign, Health Care Without Harm, and the Healthy Building Network are examples of efforts to move sectors of the economy toward safer products that use safer chemicals.
