As a society, we have refined our expectations of the education system to include a higher level of academic preparation for even the youngest learners. In past generations, kindergarten was often the first academic encounter a child had, but we have come to regard the preschool experience as essential to preparing an academically ready individual. More specifically, reading acquisition is a process that we now know begins early in the preschool years and that children bring to the preschool experience very different levels of knowledge and skills pertaining to literacy. Preschool experiences are essential to preparing academically ready individual. Technology plays an important role in this process.
