Among the chief reasons for adolescent alcohol use are demographic characteristics, family relationships, social relationships, peer relationships, low self-esteem, social pressure, rebellion, and depression. It has been shown that alcohol users display a tendency for violence and aggressive behavior. The present study explores the relationship among gender, age, the presence of family members who drink, and alcohol use by 16- to 18-year-old high school adolescents. Also assessed is the relationship between gender to role models who drink and the starting age for alcohol. Participants were high school adolescents from Ankara city center, Turkey. The results of the study suggest that age is a significant factor in adolescent alcohol consumption (p less than 0.01), whereas gender and alcohol-consuming family members are not (p greater than 0.05). In addition, it was found that gender is related to following role models who drink (p less than 0.05) and the starting age for alcohol (p less than 0.01). (Contains 5 tables.)
