Growth, Development and a Way out of Principalship's Isolation

The focus in the author's role as Director of the New Zealand Principal and Leadership Centre (NZPLC) has been strongly influenced by her involvement with principals and has resulted in her dedication to a developmental approach that meets interpersonal, personal and professional needs of principals. It has been imperative that the focus of such an approach is on providing support and growth for principals who are beyond the "initiation" phase of their career and more likely to be in the "developmental", "autonomous" and "advancement" phases. In this article, the author begins by outlining how they have achieved this at NZPLC. In the second part of the paper the feedback from participants on one developmental approach is presented.
