Telling a lie, according to Harry G. Frankfurt, is different from engaging in bullshit because, while a lie is designed to insert a particular falsehood at a specific point in a set or system of beliefs in order to avoid the consequences of having that occupied by truth, bullshit neither misrepresents the state of affairs to which it refers nor the beliefs of the speaker concerning that state of affairs. In this article, the author cites in an educational context four exemplars in which a variety of people have been guilty of engaging in the former.
