Joe is a 25-year-old single male who has had problems with severe impulsivity, inattentiveness, focusing and sustaining his attention, easy distractibility, hyperactivity, a short temper, and school problems dating back to early childhood. These symptoms have resulted in marked impairment in academic, social, vocational, and daily adaptive functioning. He has comorbid diagnoses of alcohol abuse and dyslexia and also uses marijuana and cocaine on occasion. He dropped out of school in the eleventh grade and estimates he has had more than 30 jobs in his adult life that usually result in his getting fired for losing his temper. Joe and his parents are seeking advice on how to get him to function better in his adult life. They want him to be more independent, reliable, consistent, organized, and less impulsive. They want him to eventually be able to move out of their home and to be able to function successfully as an independent and responsible adult. They are interested in knowing about any and all possible treatments that might help him gain better control of his attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms so he can make a more successful transition to adulthood.
