Extensive research has concluded that children benefit from early childhood education, and that these benefits can last a lifetime. Quality early childhood programs and services are bidirectional: The program impacts the child, and the child is impacted by the program. For children to benefit from all that programs have to offer, it is essential that they are engaged within the early childhood environment. In this article, the author discusses how to ensure engagement in early childhood environments. It is the responsibility of each teacher to develop knowledge of individual children's developmental needs, learning styles, goals, and preferences for environmental interaction. Before focusing on how curriculum and teaching practices can support individual children's learning and development, teachers must consider the accessibility of the physical and social environment.
