The UK Government's consultation on informal adult learning recognises the importance of self-directed learning, learning in social movements, and learning that involves the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). There is a much clearer picture of how computers and the Internet are used by people in their everyday lives and for learning. What is less known, however, is how social movements and adult learning are influenced by ICTs and how people learn through the use of ICTs when they are involved in campaigns. This research examines the role of technologically enhanced learning in the environmental justice movement in Scotland through three case studies. Two involve community-based campaigns: one against fish farming in the north west of Scotland; the other an occupational health campaign over working conditions in a microchip processing plant in the industrial belt of Scotland. This article considers the third case study, which concerns a national organisation, Friends of the Earth Scotland (FoES), and a survey undertaken among activists and users of the organisation's website. It also discusses four main types of learning that can be identified from the survey. (Contains 2 tables.)
