This summer Chris Wardley, Chair of Access to Community Education (ACE), a small charity run by and for disabled people in Torbay, wrote to Gordon Brown. She asked him whether his mission to "fulfil the potential and realise the talents of all people" was based solely on economic goals or whether everyone, including disabled people, would be helped to achieve their personal potential. In this article, the author describes the potentially bleak future the group is facing with ACE's failure to obtain renewed Lottery funding after two decades of helping hundreds of disabled people realise their potential. Its loss would leave its members isolated, undoing much of what they have achieved over the past 18 years. Without core funding, ACE will have to increase costs to users, the majority of whom are on fixed benefits and cannot afford increased fees. The author contends that if the Government is not minded to fully fund Adult and Community Learning (ACL) Centre in Brixham, Devon, it ought at least to consider transferring funds from healthcare and adult services to ensure that work such as the one in Torbay can continue.
