In this article, the authors explore the origins of computer-based instruction (CBI) and its influences on the Instructional Design and Technology profession. Specifically, the authors first identify four particularly popular CBI methodologies: (1) tutorials; (2) simulations; (3) games; and (4) hypermedia/web-based applications. Then, they examine Division of Audiovisual Instruction (DAVI)/Association of Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) convention presentations from the last fifty years (1957-2006) and tabulate the CBI presentations that occurred during this time period. Finally, the authors discuss the implications of the influence of CBI on the professional association and how the association responds to technological innovation. (Contains 6 figures.)
