Nomenclature, Analysis, and Creation: An Approach to Teaching Visuals
Hoger, Beth
Business Communication Quarterly, v69 n4 p429-432 2006
Visual stimuli are inescapable in contemporary business communication. The temptation is great to pick a few genres dominated by visual elements and teach them discreetly, but the carryover may be minimal, and time is precious. In this article, the author describes a three-pronged approach to teaching visual aspects of business communication. Students begin by creating a list of design variables, identifying criteria that are felt or noticed but not often named. Students then do a standard analysis of a piece of business communication that relies heavily on visual elements. A year ago, the author added the third piece: Students now create a piece in which visual elements are essential in communicating a message. None of these three "prongs" is particularly revolutionary, but they complement one another well and prepare students to be visually attuned creators "and" recipients. The approach outlined in this article pulls the discussion of visuals together and links it to other work in the course. Each piece builds on its predecessors and lays the groundwork for discussing many other visual media. Technologies are present, but success and failure are not related to expertise, and communication principles are interwoven with design principles at every level. Drawing on existing knowledge and making principles transparent gives students more confidence in their ability to generate and critique visuals--as business communication.
