Mathews, Jay
School Administrator, v65 n6 p30-37 Jun 2008
In this article, the author profiles Paul D. Houston, an executive director of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), who became one of the few major education leaders to publicly reject the new No Child Left Behind bill, even as it became federal law. The AASA has never before seen the likes of an executive like Houston, a fast-talking lover of debate and art and literate prose, a master of the metaphor in his speaking and writing, and someone who enjoys poking good-natured fun at his lifelong profession. He is also a public figure eager to welcome into his corner office and engage in conversation even those in education and politics who disagree with him. As his 14-year tenure leading AASA draws to a close, Paul Houston has promoted the interests of public schools like few others. His sharp views, sometimes differing from others in Washington, and his colorful writing have resonated deeply with school leaders.
