Do PSAT Scores Predict Student Success in Advanced Placement Programs?
Clement, Russell W.; De Rose, Diego S.; Sutton, Cary O.
ERS Spectrum, v23 n1 p31-41 Win 2005
Researchers conducted two studies in Broward County (Fla.) Public Schools. The first study examined the utility of the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) for predicting future success on college entrance examinations and in advanced placement (AP) courses. The second examined the relationship between PSAT scores and subsequent year AP enrollment status for 10th-grade students. Results from Study 1 revealed the PSAT was a stronger predictor of AP examination scores than were the state-mandated assessments. Findings from Study 2 revealed an increasing trend in the proportion of 10th-grade PSAT students enrolled in an AP course during the following school year.
