Including Children with Autism in General Physical Education: Eight Possible Solutions
Zhang, Jiabei; Griffin, Ann J.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v78 n3 p33-37, 50 Mar 2007
The number of children diagnosed with autism is on the rise, and teachers are seldom prepared to teach children with autism in their classes. However, it is possible to successfully include children with autism in general physical education settings by understanding inclusive physical education, individualizing instruction, targeting age-appropriate motor skills, using appropriate teaching strategies, managing challenging behaviors, utilizing unique and novel equipment, developing social interaction skills, and using effective communication methods. Each of these solutions is described with its operational definition, research evidence, and application method. (Contains 1 table.)
