Sims, Sandra
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v21 n5 p35-37 May-Jun 2008
Advocacy is a continuous process that involves more than simply passing legislation. It is a year-round commitment that involves educating policymakers about the importance of achieving health and wellness in any state. As such, it is important for the advocacy group to have a plan, be organized, and work together toward a unified goal. Success is often measured by wins and losses; however, true success is being competitive year after year. Advocacy success is frequently difficult to measure, as it may take years to implement policy improvements. The state association that is continually visible working to improve the health and wellness of others in the state will be seen as a fundamental winner of advocacy efforts. Over the last 20 years, the author's advocacy group has worked hard to establish a strong presence within the state of Alabama and has learned many valuable lessons. This article presents some ideas which have been helpful to them, and have proven to be instrumental in their fight for advocacy.
