Learning Accountability and Responsibility--The Gymnasium as a Metaphor for Life
Gubacz-Collins, Klara
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v21 n2 p7-11 Nov-Dec 2007
A significant part of teaching, whether in the gymnasium, on the field, or in the classroom, involves the creation of a sense of community with students that is nurturing, caring, safe, and conducive to learning. An essential outcome of this should be the development, within the individual student, of an ability to be both responsible and accountable for his/her behaviors. This article presents a pedagogical model developed by Don Hellison called "Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility" (TPSR). TPSR was developed to help students learn accountability by incrementally increasing the amount of responsibility given to them and by carefully shifting a significant portion of decision-making responsibilities to the students.
