Understanding a Monocultural, Student-Teaching Setting from Sociocultural Perspectives: A Video Analysis
Chepyator-Thomson, Jepkorir Rose
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v77 n8 p17-19 Oct 2006
Sociocultural considerations play an important role in any teaching episode in our increasingly diverse society. This analysis focuses on a male European American preservice teacher, who is practicing teaching at a school with 3% African-American, 3% Asian, 91% European American, 1% Hispanic American, and 3% multiracial students. Examination of the video reveals communication to be the main theme, which functions in the contexts of language and culture, in addition to space usage, culture, and power. How the social class environment influences the physical education program is also analyzed.
