Behavioral Assembly Required: Particularly for Quantitative Courses
Mazen, Abdelmagid
Journal of Management Education, v32 n3 p339-362 2008
This article integrates behavioral approaches into the teaching and learning of quantitative subjects with application to statistics. Focusing on the emotional component of learning, the article presents a system dynamic model that provides descriptive and prescriptive accounts of learners' anxiety. Metaphors and the metaphorizing process are suggested as a creative strategy to deal with quantitative anxiety and to achieve transformative learning. The article provides detailed illustration for implementing the process in the learning of three core statistical concepts--expected value, normal curve, and confidence interval--in addition to brief images for regression.
