Reforms in America's colleges and universities seem to be driven not by quest for quality, but rather, by the need to deal with financial woes. In addition, trends such as the changing shape of the global economy and the unprecedented push for educational accountability are pushing higher education to consider education reforms. In this article, the author offers several strategies that higher education can adopt to deal with the forces of change in the global economy: (1) adopt student-centered models; (2) become more market-driven; (3) develop "Centers of Excellence"; (4) Be a good neighbor; (5) Integrate distance learning technologies; (6) integrate wireless technologies; (7) design flexible facilities; and (8) facilitate social interaction. These reforms, while addressing goals that are important to elected officials and the public, also preserve the fundamental purpose of providing the best opportunities for a relevant, high-quality education.
