Few communities have developed successful strategies for attracting large numbers of older youth to their out-of-school-time programs. Older youth are a challenging population to serve programmatically for several reasons: (1) Demanding schedules mean that young people's participation on a regular basis can be challenging; (2) Teens are not necessarily motivated to seek out positive programming alternatives because they enjoy simply hanging out with peers; and (3) Many programs stop focusing on young people because they struggle with sustaining their interest and involvement over time. In addition to meeting the unique programmatic needs of the older youth population, communities have struggled with the challenge of creating community-wide integrated approaches to service delivery and resource development. This article explores the rationale for creating and implementing community wide older youth support approaches and offers concrete recommendations for planning and action. (Contains 7 endnotes.)
