The current landscape of higher education requires those in academe to be accountable to an array of constituents. With students, parents, and government seeking proof of a return on their investment and efficient management of fiscal and human resources, it is essential to have access to appropriate and useful data when researching the operation of an institution and its faculty. Given the central role of the faculty and their involvement with students in and outside the classroom, it is critical to understand faculty work in order to assess institutional effectiveness. This article focuses on how institutional research in general, and the Delaware Study of Instructional Costs and Productivity in particular, can provide information on faculty work. The Delaware Study annually collects detailed information on faculty teaching loads, instructional costs, and externally funded scholarship, all at the academic discipline level of analysis.
