Students with Disabilities: Doing What's Right
Bryan, Anne; Myers, Karen A.
About Campus, v11 n4 p18-22 Sep-Oct 2006
Providing equal educational access to students with disabilities is both a legal and a moral obligation. It is also an important component of the educational experience of all students. On college and university campuses, the needs of students with disabilities are typically considered the responsibility of the disability services office. Although disability services is the appropriate entity to collect and verify disability documentation and determine reasonable accommodations for these students, all members of a campus community--administrators, faculty, staff, and students with and without disabilities--should understand that access, accommodations, and inclusion of students with disabilities are shared responsibilities. The responsibilities of college and university educators are to understand their legal and moral obligations in regard to students with disabilities; to be aware of their institution's rights and responsibilities in regard to this population; and to ensure that their campuses are equipped with devices, techniques, and action plans for facilitating access for all students. The authors offer several suggestions for creating this type of inclusive, accessible campus environment. (Contains 4 notes.)
