The Business of Learning at Vocational and Technical Schools
Mattingly, Richard Scott; Shupp, Matthew R.
About Campus, v9 n4 p25-27 Sep-Oct 2004
Plenty of educators lament the small amount of time and inclination students have for participating in a variety of opportunities for learning and growth in and outside the college classroom. With the majority of students working concurrently with their enrollment and with an ever-increasing focus on efficient time to degree, there seems to be less time for students to meander through clubs, organizations, special events, community service, elective courses, and other opportunities for growth and engagement in the campus community. The rush to move through college is particularly acute for students who attend vocational and technical institutions. Figuring out how to help these students make time for all that the institution has to offer is the challenging work the authors are tasked with as student development specialists at The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College. In this article, the authors share the strategies they have employed which may serve as an example for those at both two-year and four-year schools who find encouraging student involvement to be a growing challenge.
