Getting the Best from an International Year
Kneale, Pauline
Journal of Geography in Higher Education, v32 n2 p337-345 May 2008
A year spent studying at a university in another country, or working internationally as part of a degree in geography, should be an extremely exciting and rewarding experience. The aim of this Directions is to help students to prepare in advance so that they make the most of their opportunities. It aims to help them to set their own agenda for their visit and to plan to make the most of their opportunities. It is suggested that they take this plan with them and develop it as new opportunities arise. Studying abroad gives students the opportunity to get to know a particular country and its people in depth, and to develop as an individual. Living and working in another country will always present challenges; overcoming these helps to instil self-confidence, high skills levels, flexibility and awareness. Developing these skills enhances employability. Many students enjoy the international experience and choose to live and work internationally later in life. Certainly, adding international experience to a degree can influence their decisions about future careers and directions. Given the international dimensions of business and when competition is strong, students with experience of living and working abroad and/or foreign-language skills can have a real edge. If they do not make the most of their international experience when applying for jobs and in interviews this bonus will disappear.
