Shaping Ethics: Youth Workers Matter
Walker, Joyce A.; Gran, Cecilia F.; Curiel, Arnoldo
New Directions for Youth Development, n108 p19-30 Win 2005
As practitioners and scholars working at a university-based training institute, the authors believe that adults working in youth development programs and helping youth gain an ethical understanding of the world must themselves adopt some principles of ethical practice and use them to practice three habits in their professional work: personal ethical awareness, critical reflection on practice, and intentional actions in relationships and daily work with young people. In this article, the authors explore the topic of ethics and lay out a three-step progression for integrating ethical thinking and action into daily work with young people. They propose some principles of practice that can be used as both standards for professional conduct in the youth development workplace and as principles for individual ethical decision making. The aim is congruence in what is done, practiced, and observed in daily experience and what is explicitly taught to young people. (Contains 13 notes.)
