Parent-Child Connections: The Essential Component for Positive Youth Development and Mental Health, Safe Communities, and Academic Achievement
Pollack, William S.
New Directions for Youth Development, n103 p17-30 Fall 2004
A Study found that although planning vicious violence in teens' cases varied in its time frame or intricacy, almost all the tragic events had a lead time from days to months in which some preemptive action could have been taken. Indeed, in a large number of the cases, the assailant eventually broke his code of silence and told either a peer or an adult of his intent, but with little or no interventionary response forthcoming. Most of these tragedies were preventable early on through the type of community interactions and connections the author describes in this article. They were stoppable up to the last moment if others had only taken proper heed of the seriousness of those youths' communications and had those youths felt they had a positive connection with someone who could make a difference, but this did not occur. In fact, close to 70 percent of these so-called killers had been viciously teased or bullied for long periods prior to their violent attacks, and approximately 75 percent had either threatened suicide or attempted to kill themselves. They were depressed, and those closest to them did not appear to know that. In this article, the author attempts to highlight the lack of genuine connection, indeed the disconnect, between the children and the adults who loved them and even between the adults in their families and the adults in their schools who together may have been able to prevent such violence. Violence is potentially preventable through better support for inter- and intrafamily relationships. This is not to put the onus on the family or the school, but rather to reempower them as units of safety and succor and to recognize their myriad opportunities not only to vouchsafe psychological well-being, but also to prevent the very troubling aspects of youth violence around.
