Light Students' Interest in the Nature of Science
Olson, Joanne K.
Science Scope, v27 n1 p18-22 Sep 2003
The nature of science is a vital part of students' educational experience. It includes understanding what science is and how it works, in accordance with Content Standard G of the "National Science Education Standards" (NRC 1996). Effective science instruction requires incorporation of science content, science processes, and the nature of science. Any one or two of these elements cannot effectively exist apart from the third. Portraying science accurately while teaching content and process is important to help students develop robust understanding. The issue is not whether teachers will teach the nature of science to their students, only what image of science will be conveyed. This article describes an activity that helps students apply their knowledge of electrical circuits. The author has used the activity with middle school students, and modified it so that science content, process, and the nature of science can be seamlessly incorporated together.
