Defining Rural Community(ies): Future Considerations for Informal and Nonformal Adult Education in Rural Communities
Bracken, Susan J.
New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, n117 p83-92 Spr 2008
The study and practice of adult education takes place in many forms and contexts, so much so that it is sometimes asked, "What isn't adult education?" For the purposes of this chapter, informal and nonformal adult education include just about any endeavor adults undertake to learn and work together outside formal classroom, workplace, or postsecondary educational settings. This article examines a basic question about rural informal and nonformal adult education: How do adults who participate in nonformal and informal adult learning activities define rural character or rural community? Building on this discussion, it then makes suggestions for framing future rural adult education research on informal and nonformal adult learning.
