Masterpiece Mosaics
Ellyn, Tracy
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v107 n8 p34-36 Apr 2008
Art education is unique because it is driven far more by experiential involvement than by a predetermined curriculum. When a group of students creates a masterpiece, there are several outcomes. Each student contributes based on his or her strengths. Partial solutions placed into the learning pot by each student result in whole solutions. Because the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts, the end product is always remarkable. In this article, the author discusses how the students at South Miami Elementary School's Expressive Arts Center in Miami, Florida, had collaborated, not only to create a mosaic masterpiece, but also to decorate their school with the creative spirit that these young artists, musicians, dancers, and actors exude on a daily basis.
