Since the Renaissance, artists have used one- and two-point perspective to describe space in their work. After the release of artist David Hockney's theory questioning the use of lenses and "Scientific America's" attempt to disprove Hockney's theories, perspective has gotten quite controversial. The art world's perplexity surrounding the concept of linear perspective mirrors the reaction of the authors students when attempting to explain terms foreign to them, such as vanishing point, horizon line, and eye level. This article describes a project where the students use digital cameras to document places in or near the school where one- or two-point perspective would be evident. Eventually the project grew to include images of foreign countries, towns, or other places that included one or more vanishing points. (Contains 1 one web link.)
