A parallel between plagiarism and corporate crime raises eyebrows--and ire-- on campuses, but for John Barrie, the comparison is a perfectly natural one. In the 10 years since he founded iParadigms, which sells the antiplagiarism software Turnitin, he has argued--forcefully, and at times combatively--that academic plagiarism is growing, and that it is a societal blight that only his software can cure. Professors and teachers submit student papers to Turnitin, which then compares these papers with texts in a giant database of books, journals, Web sites, and essays, and checked for evidence of plagiarized material. Critics of these antiplagiarism programs argue that, not only does Turnitin grab student papers for use in its database without compensating the students, but it also encourages professors to spend time policing their students instead of teaching them. These critics argue that Turnitin is routinely violating students' intellectual-property rights, that schools unfairly compel students to submit their essays to Turnitin, that iParadigms was profiting from their works---and some critics have taken their arguments to court. The article concludes with a chart comparing three popular anti-plagiarism programs: Turnitin, SafeAssign, and PAIRwise.
